Accessing the Finance Portal
You’ll also need login credentials for the Portuguese Finance Portal (Portal das Finanças). These are usually provided by the fiscal representative or the company you used to get your NIF. Make sure to request your login and password before ending your contract with them — they may not provide it afterward.
If you don’t manage to get the login details in time, you can request a new password by visiting your local Finanças office. Be prepared: in our case, we visited the office in Tábua, where no one spoke English. We had to bring a printed, translated letter explaining our request. Always carry your passport, proof of address, and NIF when visiting in person.

Accessing the Portuguese Finance Portal
Once you have your login details, head to the official Finance Portal: https://www.portaldasfinancas.gov.pt/at/html/index.html
Click “Iniciar Sessão” (Login).
Select NIF and enter your NIF number and password.
Click “Autenticar” (Authenticate).
This portal is your central hub for all tax-related matters in Portugal. Whether you’re living, working, or running a business here, you’ll be using it regularly.
Here are some of the key things you can manage through the portal:
Vehicle Tax (IUC) – Check and pay your annual vehicle tax.
Municipal Property Tax (IMI) – See details of any property tax due (if you own property in Portugal).
IRS (Income Tax) – Submit your annual income tax return (mandatory if you’re employed or self-employed in Portugal).
E-Invoices – If you’re self-employed or a sole trader, you can raise invoices directly through the portal.
(Note: You’ll first need to register your economic activity — more on that in the “Working in Portugal” section coming soon.)
